PPA and OMC honoured in Harbour Master awards

PILBARA Ports Authority and OMC received top honours at the recent inaugural International Harbour Masters Association awards in London.

The awards were held at the International Maritime Organization headquarters and featured a broad cross-section of industry.

AMSA, in partnership with OMC, implemented an underkeel management system through the Torres Strait in 2010 and have been collecting data and improving the system ever since. Now they are at the stage of trialling deeper draught shipping through the Torres Strait and trial vessels have safely navigated the passage at draughts of up to 12.5 metres.

Hi-tech takes weighty ships through shallows

OMC International, founded by engineer Dr Terry O’Brien in 1987, is a leader in the development of under-keel clearance software technology.

University partnership recognises OMC's expertise as world-leader in real-time UKC management.

A prime concern of shipping is maintaining a safe under keel clearance (UKC) to avoid the risk of a grounding. In May 2017, OMC celebrated its 30th anniversary since my resignation from the University of Melbourne to establish OMC, and to develop the engine for a working dynamic UKC system (DUKC®) for commercial shipping. It became operational and first replaced static UKC rules in the early 90s.

IHMA announces its first ever Port Operations Awards

In a joint effort with Pilbara Ports Authority (PPA), OMC International’s real-time DUKC® e-Navigation technology helped enable the largest ever iron ore shipment to leave Port Hedland at a record sailing draft of 19.95 metres, Executive Director Dr Terry O’Brien AM said today.

International Harbour Masters Association

OMC International's suite of under-keel clearance management innovations, including DUKC and the Dynamic Port Capacity Model, has been recognised at the inaugural IHMA awards. Presented at the Association’s biennial Congress Dinner held at the Headquarters of the International Maritime Organization on 27 June 2018, the IHMA Safe, Efficient and Secure Port Award was made to Pilbara Ports Authority for UKC management at Port Hedland.

Member (AM) of the Order of Australia

On 8 June 2015, in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, Dr Terry O’Brien is appointed a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia for “significant service to maritime engineering, to the development of innovative marine navigation equipment and to education”.

On 19 November 2014, at a dinner in Sydney, OMC Executive Director Dr Terry O’Brien AM is inducted into the Australian Maritime Hall of Fame for “making an outstanding contribution to Australia’s maritime industry” during an impressive career spanning more than 50 years.
