Precision Clearance

In 2013, the Port of Montreal awarded OMC International a tender to implement a Dynamic Under Keel Clearance (DUKC®) system in the St. Lawrence River to allow river stakeholders (port, Coast Guard, pilots and industry) to optimize use of the water column and ensure the safety of vessels. Today, this system is in operational trial with regulatory approval underway.

VRCA welcomes GrainCorp records at Geelong

By David Sexton – Melbourne

VICTORIAN Regional Channels Authority chief executive Michael Harvey has applauded a record-breaking month by grain handlers GrainCorp at Geelong.

A large harvest and the introduction of leading marine technology have been attributed as helping drive exports and ship cargoes. Ships carrying the largest tonnages of canola, wheat and barley to be fully loaded in Geelong eclipsed previous February records, with the bulk grain handler reaped its highest recorded month of grain exports at the Port.

Mr Harvey said Dynamic Under Keel Clearance (DUKC®) technology had played a key role, after the VRCA introduced it last year. This allowed ships to safely load to maximum capacity and helped strengthen Geelong’s position in a competitive market.

“It’s all about allowing ships to carry larger cargoes to and from Geelong’s port and that’s just what GrainCorp has achieved with its fleet of records in February,’’ Mr Harvey said.

OMC's DUKC System Plays Major Role at Port Hedland

In a joint effort with Pilbara Ports Authority (PPA), OMC International’s real-time DUKC e-Navigation technology helped enable the largest ever iron ore shipment to leave Port Hedland at a record sailing draft of 19.95 meters, Executive Director Dr Terry O’Brien AM said today.

“Under DUKC advice a record 270,006 tons of iron ore left Port Hedland - the world’s largest bulk export port - on the Fortescue Metals Group loaded ship HL Tubarao last Wednesday morning March 1,” he said. “Our technology, which has been operating at Port Hedland for more than 20 years, safely allowed an increased draft of 0.70m over the traditionally conservative static rule, which meant an extra 12,000 tons of iron ore could be loaded.”
